Chasing, brick-throwing and clashes were going on between DU students and students of 7 affiliated colleges at Nilkhet intersection. Hasnat Abdullah, central coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, arrived at the scene of the clash to stop the students. At this time, he faced strong resistance from the angry students.
Earlier, BGB Public Relations Officer Md. Shariful Islam said that 2 platoons of BGB have been deployed with the help of the police to keep the situation normal.
Meanwhile, students of Dhaka University chased seven college students who came to surround the residence of the DU Pro-VC. In this, the seven college students retreated and took position at Nilkhet intersection. However, chasing and brick-throwing were going on between both sides.
The incident began at around 12:15 am on Sunday (January 26).
Earlier at 6:30 pm, students from seven colleges blocked the Science Lab, Technical Mor. After that, they also blocked the capital's Tanti Bazar.
The students complained that when they went to the DU Pro-VC (Education) about the problems of seven colleges and the reduction in the number of admission seats, he behaved rudely and threw them out of the room. He said that he did not know anything about seven colleges.
They further complained that although he was given a memorandum in this regard 21 days ago, he did not read it. He used aggressive behavior because he did not know the students of seven colleges. Therefore, the students' movement has started against his rude behavior.
In addition, student representative Abdur Rahman called on the DU Pro-VC to apologize for his rude behavior and made 5-point demands. They are - the unreasonable quota system in the admission test of seven colleges should be canceled from the 2024-25 session; students should not be admitted beyond the capacity of the classroom; Students should be admitted taking into account the teacher-student ratio; negative marks should be added; to ensure transparency in the admission fees of the seven colleges, the admission fee money should be deposited in a new account, except for DU, in coordination with the expert committee formed by the ministry.
