JnU students call off hunger strike after 35 hours
Dhaka: Jagannath University (JnU) students have called off their hunger strike after about 35 hours. However, they have announced that they will continue the campus shutdown program.
Earlier, the university students took a stand in front of the secretariat demanding three points, including handing over the work of the second campus of Jagannath University (JnU) to the army. They took a stand in front of the secretariat at around 4:50 pm on Monday (January 13).
AKM Rakib, a student of the Department of Botany at Jagannath University, announced the withdrawal of the hunger strike in front of the secretariat at a press conference at 7 pm on Monday.
Earlier, the university students, including the protesters, started a march from Jagannath University towards the secretariat at 4 pm. The students reached in front of the secretariat at around 4:45 pm. During this, the sick students on hunger strike participated in the march by riding a rickshaw with a saline stand. More than five hundred students of the university participated along with the students on hunger strike.
AKM Rakib said at the press conference, "We have received a written commitment that the agreement to hand over the work of the second campus to the army will be signed at the meeting to be held next Wednesday." He also promised to construct temporary steel-based buildings in Bani Bhaban and Dr. Habibur Rahman Hall. He also promised to verify and discuss the issue of providing allowance to 70 percent of the students. As a result, we are withdrawing our hunger strike. Since they have accepted two of the three demands and will verify one, we are withdrawing the hunger strike. However, all academic and administrative activities of the university will remain shut until the meeting on Wednesday."
