Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two cases against former Faridpur-4 MP Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury alias Nixon Chowdhury and his wife Tarin Hossain.

The cases were filed at the ACC's Dhaka Integrated District Office on Thursday (January 9).

The case has been filed on charges of unusual transactions of Tk. 3,162 crore in the bank accounts of Nixon Chowdhury and his wife and acquiring illegal assets of about Tk. 19.5 crore.

A three-member team led by ACC Deputy Director Md. Salahuddin has worked to investigate the allegations. Earlier, the court had banned Nixon and his wife from traveling abroad.

The complaint states that Nixon Chowdhury exerted influence in Faridpur-4 constituency by taking advantage of his relationship with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He earned huge money by illegally extracting and selling sand from the Arial Khan River and the Padma River. In addition, he is accused of grabbing land and deeding it. The complaint states that he and his family have registered about 1,100 bighas of land in Bhanga and surrounding areas of Faridpur in their names.

The ACC has initiated legal proceedings regarding these cases.

Dhaka: India has admitted to sending a letter to return former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back home, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rafiqul Alam.

He made this statement at a press briefing at the Foreign Ministry on Thursday (January 9) afternoon.

Rafiqul Alam said, 'India has admitted to sending a letter to return Sheikh Hasina back. Bangladesh will await India's response.'

Regarding the Hindustan Times news report on Sheikh Hasina's visa extension, he said, 'The Foreign Ministry informs all countries when someone's passport is cancelled. If the passport is cancelled, there is no issue of visa.'

Regarding those injured in the July protests, the spokesperson said, 'The Foreign Ministry is working on quickly obtaining visas for their treatment abroad. So far, 11 people have been sent abroad for treatment. Two have also returned home after treatment.'

On the Rohingya issue, Rafiqul Alam said, 'Recently, 36 Rohingyas have infiltrated Bangladesh. The security forces are on high alert at the border. But in some cases, we also have to look at the humanitarian aspect.

Regarding the Bangladeshis in Mozambique, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "The High Commission in Pretoria has been instructed to assist Bangladeshis who wish to return home due to the unstable environment in Mozambique."
