Parliament's failure has brought about the collapse of the democratic system: Dr. Mahfuz Parvez
Professor Dr. Mahfuz Parvez, Chairman of the Department of Political Science, Chattogram University (CU) and Executive Director of the Chattogram Center for Regional Studies (CCRSBD), said, "The past parliaments of Bangladesh could not be made the center of politics. The failure of the parliament, which was obedient to the top leaders and the ruling party in the past, has brought about the collapse of the democratic system. Due to this, the spread of autocracy, authoritarianism, dictatorship and fascism under the guise of parliamentary politics has become possible."
He said these things in his presiding speech at a seminar titled 'The Nature and Potential of Women's Representation in the National Parliament of Bangladesh' organized by the Department of Political Science, CU on Monday (December 30).
Dr. Mahfuz Parvez said, "Various inconsistencies in various areas including elections, candidate nomination, and governance have not allowed the development of a genuine parliamentary system in the country. Parliament has become a rubber stamp and has given a seal to all the government's work. Parliamentary politics has not been able to play its proper role in strengthening democratic governance."
Dr. Mahfuz Parvez said, "The consensus of political parties is essential to eliminate the weaknesses and shortcomings in the parliamentary system in Bangladesh. Through which it will be possible to make the parliament the real center of national political activities by freeing it from the subordination of individuals or parties. In this regard, it is necessary to seriously consider the issues of making the parliament more public-oriented and public-oriented by including all political forces, civil society, professionals, and experts in addition to elected representatives."
