Beximco workers set 5 buses on fire, hundreds vandalized
The Chandra-Nabinagar highway has become a battlefield due to the protests and vandalism of Beximco Group workers in the Chakraborty area of Gazipur metropolis demanding the opening of factories and the introduction of banking facilities. At that time, the protesting workers set 5 passenger buses and trucks on fire. They also vandalized more than fifty vehicles. As a result, the movement of vehicles on that highway has been suspended.
The incident took place in the Chakraborty area under Kashimpur police station in Gazipur on Wednesday (January 22) evening. Upon receiving information, fire service personnel went to the spot and are trying to control the fire.
Earlier, 42,000 workers of some factories of the Beximco Group announced a mass rally to press for their demands at around 3 pm on Tuesday (January 21). On that day, they gave the interim government a 24-hour ultimatum. After this incident, they started the rally at around 3 pm today. When tension spread among the workers during the rally, they first blocked the Chandra- Nabinagar road. They started vandalizing vehicles and set fire to 5 buses and trucks.
An officer working in the control room of EPZ Fire Service said, "Our 3 units are at the scene. We cannot provide any further information until further notice."
Superintendent of Police of Gazipur Industrial Police 2, Mizanur Rahman, said, "In the Chakraborty area, Beximco Group workers have blocked roads and caused vandalism and arson. Our law enforcement forces are working to control the situation there."
