The quantity of imported goods at Benapole port has decreased by 75,729 metric tons compared to the previous year. Traders said that the global recession and various obstacles in trade are responsible for this situation. Last year, 20, 38,780 metric tons of various types of goods were imported from India through this port. Earlier, in 2023, the import volume was 2,14,509 metric tons. Accordingly, imports have decreased by 3.58 percent.

It is known that out of the total 24 land ports in the country, 16 ports trade with India. Of these, the most trade is between Benapole and Petrapole ports. However, since the country was hit by the coronavirus, the dollar price has been rising in the global recession since 2019, and the amount of imports has been decreasing. In addition, rapid clearance of goods and various infrastructure problems have also become the reasons for the trade deficit. However, after assuming office, the interim government took various initiatives to expand trade. In the last two months, a port cargo vehicle terminal was launched at the zero line of Benapole Port and a scanning machine was installed at the port. Various steps were taken by forming a committee at the initiative of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to quickly unload goods and expand trade.

And among the exported products, jute, jute products, garments, ready-made garments, chemicals, Bashundhara tissue, melamine, fish are worth mentioning.

Mohammad Meherullah, Port Affairs Secretary of Benapole C&F Agents Association, said that various types of products are worth Tk. 50,000 crore are imported from India every year and various types of products worth Tk. 8,000 crore are exported to India. Most importers are interested in using Benapole Port due to its easy communication system. However, various obstacles hinder the quick clearance of goods. If trade facilitation measures are ensured, imports and revenue will increase.
