At least 29 people have been killed after a passenger plane crashed at an airport in the city of Muan, South Korea. The plane skidded off the runway while landing at the airport, Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported on Sunday (December 29), citing the country's Yonhap news agency and AFP.

The report said that the Jeju Air plane crashed on Sunday as it was landing at Muan International Airport. The plane had arrived from Thailand with 175 passengers and six flight attendants on board.

"So far, 29 people have died in the accident. But the number could rise," Lee Hyeon-ji, an officer with the local fire department's response team, told AFP.

A picture shared by local media showed thick black smoke billowing from the plane. Another person showed the back of the plane engulfed in flames. Firefighters were working to control the fire. Emergency vehicles were on scene to help rescue the injured.

Two people have been rescued so far, Yonhap reported. The media outlet also reported that rescue operations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, South Korean acting President Choi Sang-mok issued a statement ordering "all-out efforts for rescue operations." He called on all relevant agencies to work together to save the injured.

The crash is believed to have occurred "due to a malfunction in the landing gear" as the plane was landing at the airport, Yonhap reported.
