BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has commented that an unelected government cannot run the country for long.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized by the Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA) at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club on Saturday (December 28).
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, reforms are not a new trend. If someone claims that we are the first to bring reforms, then it is wrong. Reforms are an ongoing process. Reforms are happening every moment. The trend of reforms will continue. That is why elections cannot be stopped. We cannot let an unelected government run the country day after day. That is why we want elections soon.
He said, a wrong interpretation is given about us. That is, BNP is seeking early elections to come to power. But, we have been in power before. We were in power two or three times. God willing, we will come to power again. But we do not do politics for power.
The reform process was first started by the late President Ziaur Rahman. The Awami League established a one-party regime in Baksal. This senior BNP leader also said that Ziaur Rahman brought out multi-party democracy from there.
