The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot a Bangladeshi in the border area at Bagicha Para of Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj. The incident took place around 2 am on Saturday (January 11), the BGB said. The youth, who was shot at around 5:30 am, was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital by his relatives.
The injured youth, Md. Shahidul Islam (22), is the son of Anarul Islam of Bagichapara area of Shahbazpur Union under Shibganj Police Station in Chapainawabganj district.
Shahbazpur Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Nizamul Haque said that locals heard gunshots at the Azmatpur border around 2 am last night. Later in the morning, it was learned that a youth named Shahidul was injured in BSF firing.
59 BGB Commander Lt. Col. Golam Kibria confirmed the matter. He said that a group of 5-6 people including Shahidul had crossed the zero line of the border to bring phensedyl to the Indian border. Later, the BSF opened fire on them. Shahidul Islam was seriously injured. The rest fled. 25 bottles of phensedyl, a flashlight and a country-made weapon were recovered from the scene.
He also said that we will file a case against the members of the group on charges of illegal smuggling at the border.
Barta24.com spoke to the family of the injured youth Shahidul Islam at Rajshahi Medical College. Shahidul Islam's mother Shuktara Begum (40) said, "Like every day, today too, my son went to cut soil at around 3-4 am. My brother-in-law's son was with him. We do not understand why or for what reason my son was shot."
She also said, "We are poor people. My son studied in the Hafiziya in the madrasa. He is a Hafiz of the Quran and has also received the turban three times. But due to lack of money, he could not continue his studies." So he used to work in different places. Today too, he went to work cutting soil near the border. But we can't understand how or why my son was killed there.
Dr. Shankar Kumar Biswas, the officer-in-charge of the emergency department of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said that Shahidul was admitted to RMC Hospital at around 5:30 am on Saturday after being shot. He was shot on the right side of his chest. The bullet is inside his body.
Around 2 pm, he said that the operation on the injured Shahidul was underway. The patient's condition is stable. It is not possible to say what kind of bullet it was.
