A man was shot dead at Seagull Point on Cox's Bazar sea beach. The deceased has been identified as Golam Rabbani (55). He is a resident of Daulat Pur, Khulna, and is the son of Md. Golam Akbar.

The deceased Golam Rabbani is said to be the vice-president of Khulna Metropolitan Swechchsebak League. He was immediate past councilor of Ward No. 4 of Khulna City Corporation.

The incident took place at around 8pm on Thursday (January 9), said Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ilyas Khan.

Several police teams have launched an operation to arrest the miscreants immediately after the incident, said OC Ilyas.

Abdus Salam Babu, an auto-rickshaw driver who rescued the deceased and brought him to the hospital, said, "I heard a gunshot near the wooden bridge in front of Seagull Point. But I could not see who shot him." Then he saw a man falling down.

Abdus Salam said that he immediately rescued the injured person and took him to the hospital in his auto rickshaw.

After bringing him to the hospital, the identity of the deceased was identified by looking at the national identity card in his pocket.

During an inspection at the scene, Cox's Bazar Additional Superintendent of Police (Media Spokesperson) Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said that the killing of the former councilor could be a planned murder due to previous enmity because he is not supposed to have any enemies in Cox's Bazar. Several police teams and intelligence agencies are working on the matter.
